Tim Ibell is the Sir Kirby Laing Professor of Civil Engineering at the University of Cambridge. He received his BSc (Civil Engineering) degree from the University of Cape Town and his PhD in Structural Engineering from the University of Cambridge. After 5 years in industry and as a post-doctoral fellow, Tim joined the Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering at the University of Bath in the UK, where he was subsequently promoted through to Professor, Head of Department and Associate Dean for Research in the Faculty of Engineering and Design. His research includes the use of fabric to form extraordinary concrete structures, and the monitoring of loadings, structural behaviour and user experience in buildings to drive better design. He has a passion for education in structural engineering design, and won the University of Bath's premier teaching award in 2008 while Head of Department. In 2013, he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering for his outstanding contributions to the field of structural engineering. He served as President of the Institution of Structural Engineers for the year 2015. Currently he sits on the boards of the Institution of Structural Engineers and the Ove Arup Foundation, and also serves on the Education Committee of the Royal Academy of Engineering.
