Summary: Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) composites have become accepted structural materials for building and infrastructure applications in many parts of the world. The materials are often easier to use, more durable and can be used for the upgrading of all types of structures – from informal housing to high-rise steel and concrete buildings, and from inland bridges to offshore oil platforms. This symposium will bring together many of the world’s leading experts in the field to discuss historical and recent advances which will be of interest to a broad range of attendees at SEMC. The focus of the papers and discussions will be on lessons learned from various countries around the world in relation to FRP adoption and construction practice. Promotion of the use of these materials for construction and retrofit in Africa and other parts of the developing world will be one of the objectives of the symposium.
